The comedian Liliana Arriaga, known for her character 'La Chupitos', recently shared details about her struggle with an illness that has caused dryness in various parts of her body, including her nose, throat, and skin. In addition to the feeling of 'internal dryness', Arriaga has experienced fatigue, joint pain, an increased risk of cavities and oral infections.
Despite the health challenges she faced throughout 2023 that led to her hospitalization in September, the comedian started 2024 with optimism and hope of identifying this mysterious condition. During a meeting with the press in Mexico City, Arriaga revealed that the illness affects her salivary and tear glands, which has led her to use artificial saliva and prevents her from crying.
Even with her initial reluctance to delve into the details of her condition, Arriaga eventually revealed that she has been diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome. This is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by the presence of immune cells in the exocrine glands, mainly in the salivary and tear glands.
Sjögren's syndrome causes a reduction in the production of saliva and tears, manifesting with symptoms such as dry eyes and mouth, difficulties swallowing or speaking, as well as a sensation of eye irritation. Although the disease can occur at any age, it is more common in middle-aged women. Arriaga, despite the health challenges, remains positive and ready to celebrate life despite this new health situation she is facing.
